Exclusive Excerpt:

“Good morning, sleeping beauty!” A familiar voice cut across the street, and I winced. Carson sauntered over to me, holding a brown paper bag in one hand and a Styrofoam cup in the other.

I blinked at him, confused. “What are you doing here?”

“You mentioned where you were staying last night.”

I frowned, trying to remember. “I did?”

He slapped his hand to his chest as if I’d wounded him. “That’s the kind of welcome I get? A few dances and the lady doesn’t even remember me!”

I giggled, but pain shot through my head, and I winced.

Carson handed me the cup and the bag. “I thought you might need some hangover first-aid. You do like coffee, right?”

I nodded, taking the cup. “Actually, I like tea better, but coffee’s okay.”

Carson laughed. “Here I was trying to please your American sensibilities.” He shook his head ruefully. “If you want tea, we’ll find tea for you. That’s one thing we never run short of in London.”

I chuckled, taking a cautious sip. It was warm, but not too hot, and I took another swallow of the coffee. “What’s in the bag?”

“Hangover cure. I told you.”

I peeked inside. “A croissant?”

“Not just any croissant. It’s a chocolate croissant; you’ll love it.”

I took a tentative bite of the flaky pastry, and then I grinned up at Carson. “Oh my God. This is so good.”

He laughed. “I thought you’d like it. At least I was right about half the breakfast.”

“The coffee’s good, too.” I took another sip to prove my point.

“That’s good.” He draped an arm over my shoulder and pulled me close. We started to walk, and I hurried to finish the food. Taking the aspirin out of my bag, I popped a pill in my mouth and washed it down with coffee. Carson grinned at me. “Feeling better?”

I nodded, surprised that my head had calmed down. “Yeah. I thought it was a migraine.”

“Just a hangover. We drank a lot last night.”

I flushed, remembering the feeling of his hands running all over me on the dance floor. “It was fun.”

“It was more than fun.” His eyes sparkled, and his fingers began tracing lazy circles on my shoulder.

I shivered in delight. “So,” I said, trying to keep the quiver out of my voice, “what did you want to do today?”

His eyes danced wickedly. “Well”—he lowered his face to mine—“there are a few things I’ve had in mind,” he whispered, close enough that I could feel the vibration of his words against my skin. Hangover forgotten, I shut my eyes and parted my lips. After a moment, I felt him exhale against my mouth, and then his lips were pressed to mine.

The kiss was sweet and deep, and my body felt electric. God, so this is what I’d been missing all those years? I pressed my lips to his hungrily, but then he pulled back gently and smiled.

Dalton,
I loved you once. A love I thought irrevocable. A love I mistakenly believed could transcend both time and circumstance. Under the influence of my dimwitted, naïve, traitorous heart, I became intoxicated with what I now know was simply a figment of my self-indulgent imagination. So drunk
on the feeling, I couldn’t see what was right in front of my face. So foolishly enamored, I blindly followed my heart into the depths of an emotion that would ravage me.

Years later, I know now what I wish I knew then. I am
stronger. Smarter. Tougher. I will not allow myself to be broken again.
I loved you.
I raged for you.
I wept for you.
And now, I’m letting you go.

Author’s Note:  Under
the Influence is the journey of two childhood friends that spans the course of five pivotal years in their lives. It is a story about their discovery of true friendship as it blossoms into first love, their experience of crucial sacrifice and ultimate betrayal, and their endurance of agonizing heartbreak on the way to finding lasting redemption.

None of them truly know me.
Because the truth is, theres nothing more frightening in my world than those who know youwho really know you. The ones who know your deepest, darkest secrets. The ones who know what youre going to do before you do it. The ones who know not only what buttons to push when they seek your attention, but also the ones that can be used to completely incapacitate you.
They can be your strength.
But they can also be your weakness.
And just as a chameleon changes color to blend for protection, Ive learned to evolve into the person I need to be in order to survive the situation at hand, all while keeping people at arms length.
Yet sometimes I cant help but wonder what my true colors would have been had I not been subjected to this life. I question what it would be like to just let someone in, to tell them all of your unforgivable truths and discover they still love you in return.
I find myself utterly fascinated, awe-struck even, that there are people actually capable of truly loving someone without wondering when and how they will be betrayed. However, the knowledge of their existence also saddens me because the cold reality is I will never know that type of love. I will never know the freedom to just be with someone, without pretense or fabrication, without the endless lies and untruths.
Maybe thats why I keep holding onto Spencer when I know I shouldnt. When all my instincts scream for me to let her go, to cut those ties and just let her be.
I cant.
Im too selfish.

Excerpt:

We are about to open the conference room door and enter the hallway when he stops. He turns to me, his lovely eyes achingly sincere. “I want to take you on a date when all of this craziness is over. A real one. We’ve kind of gone about this all backwards, haven’t we?”
One corner of my mouth lifts up. “Are you saying you’d like to court me?”
There is no playfulness to his face, no quirk to his own lips. My heart flutters at his seriousness. “Yes.”
He wants to court me.
Too many emotions rush around in a caucus race throughout my body. I have no doubts of Huckleberry Finn Van Brunt’s feelings toward me. I understood them two minutes ago just as well as I did this morning when I woke up and from the night before and from the day in Wonderland where he said, in not so many words, that he was falling in love with me.
I told him he was my north star, and meant it. He countered we are binaries.
He and I . . . We’ve never said those words, though, not the ones that truly spell out fragile, deep secrets of a heart and soul. Words so easily and yet unfortunately uttered by many, be it to express their appreciation of fried bits of potatoes to sports teams on the television. Words offered so frivolously about a variety of subjects and yet can be the most difficult, most painful, most meaningful, most cherished syllables we gift another person.
I have said these words before, to another man. Another man I still love. One I know, in the deepest confines of my heart, that I will love until the last breath escapes my body. A man who courted me in secret and then publicly in the face of astonishment, disapproval, confusion, and, in the end, prophesies.
I have willingly given the man in front of me my heart, though, whether he knows it or not. He now holds it in his hands, and while I pray he is my future, there is still a part of me that bucks in conflicted confusion and delight by this declaration of his.
He wants to court me.
And yet, as sweet and romantic as such a gesture might be, I require no such formalities. My affections for Finn Van Brunt have already solidified into something real and wonderful and meaningful.

Let's face it...sometimes LOVE BITES!

LOVE BITES

By: Rachel K. Burke

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23644783-love-bites?from_search=trueWhat do you do when you fall in love with your best friend’s boyfriend?

That is the question that twenty-six year-old Justine Sterling has been asking herself ever since the day she met David Whitman, her best friend Renee’s boyfriend. Justine is determined to ignore her growing feelings for the irresistibly charming David, until one night, when she finds herself in the bed of the one person she should stay away from.

When Justine and David’s affair ends in heartbreak, Justine is forced to repair the damaged friendship with her best friend. In doing so, she learns that right and wrong decisions aren’t always black and white, and sometimes you have to follow your heart to see where it leads.

......................................................................................................................................................

Our story starts with Justine retelling the high school memories of meeting and "falling in love" with her best friend Renee. The two are fast friends and go off to college together in Los Angeles. While living in Los Angeles, post graduation, we witness the dating disasters of Justine and Renee's new relationship with David. Unfortunately for Justine, she like David a little too much, and when Renee comes back from Boston and finds them in bed together... well that's where the story begins. Present day, post-David, both Renee and Justine are back in Boston and are friends again. However, Justine is suffering from a break up after a year long relationship with David. (Yes, that David!) Will Justine get her groove back?

This story is fun and entertaining. I thoroughly enjoyed the voice and first person narration. So often I've read books where using this style fell flat. However, in this book there were well developed and supporting characters to provide addition insight into the events and plot that the story was fully  developed and multidimensional.

This novel had wonderful and nostalgic details about teenagers growing up in the 90's. The girly and rebellious teenage years of Renee and Justine add depth and character to this wonderful story of rediscovery.

..................................................Don't forget the TOUR...............................................

SOUND BITES

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13452847-sound-bites?from_search=trueRenee Evans has a knack for trouble. After walking in on her best friend and boyfriend in bed together, twenty-five year-old Renee flees sunny Los Angeles and her dream job as a music journalist and returns to her hometown of Boston – only to meet Dylan Cavallari, the mysterious, aspiring musician who lives in her apartment building. Dylan’s piercing gaze and womanizing demeanor make him exactly the type of guy that Renee should steer clear of – which is most likely the reason she falls for him. But when Renee’s troublesome ex comes back and threatens to drive her and Dylan apart, Renee is forced to face her past and save her relationship with Dylan before it's too late.

Sound Bites dramatizes what happens when Renee finds herself caught between a painful past and an uncertain future. Happiness turns out to be within her grasp, but it all depends on whether she can trust herself enough to make the right decisions. Sound Bites is a novel about love, friendship, betrayal, forgiveness, and the power of music to help you find your way.

One of My Favorite Author's, Nicole Williams, Cover Reveal!

NEW
from NYT Bestselling Author Nicole
Williams

New
Adult/Adult Romance

Releasing
January 20, 2015

Cover
designed by The Cover Lure

I grew up with three brothers. They weren’t tied to me by blood, but our connection went beyond genetics or bearing the same last name. Our connection was forged the summer I turned thirteen, the summer my mom ended her life and left me in the custody of John Armstrong, a man I’d never met. Packing all I owned in a couple of boxes, I left the familiarity of the big city and headed west to Red Mountain Ranch, set in a lonely valley outside of Jackson Hole.

Nothing was as it seemed at Red Mountain—it didn’t take long for me to figure that out. John was kind to me but distant, as if he was afraid to let anyone get too close. His three teenage sons had their own devices for keeping love as far away as they could. The eldest distracted himself with cheap relationships that had a
shelf-life of one night. The middle son threw himself into the rigor of running a ranch, and the third wielded cruelty and mind-games in his quest to keep people from getting close.

Time has gone by, and I’ve spent those years trying to forget the brother I’d fallen for—the biggest mistake of my life.

Finally, I’ve moved on. Finally, I’m back. But what I didn’t realize was that running away from the wrong brother meant I’d also run away from the right one. The one who’d been there for me all along, waiting in his brother’s shadow for the day I either would or could move on.

But a decade is a long time to wait. Has the brother I should have chosen all of those years ago moved on too? Am I about to discover that my biggest mistake wasn’t falling in love with the wrong brother, but failing to return the love of the right one sooner?

Does unrequited love have an expiration date?
I’m about to find out.

Author’s Note: This book is a "sweet" romance that isn't overly sexy. Fans of LOST & FOUND will be interested in THREE BROTHERS.

EXCERPT

I stood there, sucking in deep breaths until I felt something that resembled calm. And that was when I noticed a faint red glow coming from one end of the porch. That I hadn’t smelled the familiar scent that came with it was an indication of just how not myself I’d been when I fled out that door.

“You might want to keep running. Things are only going to get worse in there. There’s no happy ending waiting for anyone on the other side of that door.” His voice blew past the walls I’d been so sure had been
impenetrable and threaded through me as it always used to. Instead of feeling like the twenty-five-year-old woman I was, I became that impressionable girl who had worshipped the ground beneath a boy who had no right to be worshipped.

I closed my eyes and bolstered my strength. “You were always the one who was better at running, Conn. That’s more your style than mine.” Instead of down the stairs or back inside, I went toward him. I wanted him to see that he didn’t have power over me any longer. At least, I wanted him to see the façade of him
not holding power over me.

“Yet how long were you frozen on that first step when you arrived? I kind of lost count at five minutes.” His voice was just as smoky and smooth as I remembered it, and age had deepened it a key or two. The porch lights were out. With just the light coming from the buildings and barns dotted around and the orangey glow of his cigarette, I could barely make out Conn’s face. Not that I needed light to remember it. I’d memorized the perfections and imperfections of it years ago, and despite my efforts to forget, it had revisited my dreams too frequently.

Where Chase had been big, blond, and beefy, Conn was the opposite. He was taller than me but only by a couple of inches, and his hair was the same dark chestnut John’s had been before the silver took over. Conn’s body could have been described as lanky and lean, and his dark long-sleeved shirts and pants
gave off just the right degree of sinister meets tortured. That, matched with his brooding expression, had alerted me from the beginning that he was the kind of boy I should keep my distance from. The kind who had let so much darkness into his life that it suffocated all of the light.

“You were here the whole time? Camped out in your chair, smoking your cigarettes, watching me, and you didn’t say anything?” I stopped when I was still a good ten feet back from him. Distance was a good thing when it came to Conn, both mental and physical. “I should probably be surprised, but I’m not.”

Conn’s jagged smile crept into place. “So? Are you keeping your fingers crossed for a repeat of your sixteenth birthday?”

I didn’t have to see the image flash through his eyes to know exactly what he was talking about. “Nothing happened.” I crossed my arms and stood taller, trying to convince myself at the same time.

“And is that why you disappeared for seven years?” The cigarette dangled from Conn’s lips. The bottle in his hand was already a third empty, and even though I could barely see them, his eyes were both calling me closer and shoving me away. Everything about him flashed danger. Everything screamed stay away.

I’d never read the signs when it came to Conn. This time, I’d promised myself I would. I’d promised myself that I wouldn’t come back here if I wasn’t sure I could keep him at an emotional and physical distance.

“I came back because John, aka your father, is dying. I came to say good-bye.” I leaned into the railing along the porch, keeping a safe distance without making it seem as though I was concerned about how close or how far I was from Conn. “Unlike you, I’m not trying to discover what gives out first: my lungs or
my liver.”

“I’m hoping they go at the same time.” Conn plucked the cigarette from his lips long enough to take a pull from the bottle. Unlike his father, who was adamant that scotch was the only thing to drink when a person needed one, Conn chose tequila. It wasn’t a simple matter of a difference in taste. No, whatever John liked, Conn preferred the opposite. What was sad though was that in Conn’s effort to defy John at every turn, he was only proving just how significant a role his father played in his life. He was just as in tune with his dad as if he’d been mimicking him at every turn.

“Why aren’t you at dinner?” I asked, reminding myself to keep our conversation short. Conn was a master at wordplay and could lure even the greatest of cynics to his side.

“Because I don’t want to go.” He held out the bottle. When I shook my head, he let the bottle hang between us for a few moments before taking another long drink. At this rate, Conn would be shit-faced before that cigarette burned out.

“That seems to be your go-to answer to every question.”

“That’s because that’s my go-to feeling for most everything, family most of all.” Conn looked off into the distance where Red Mountain rested. Unlike the rest of us, who dodged looking at it or venturing up it, Conn seemed to view it as a refuge.

“Still haven’t gotten over your daddy issues?” I closed my eyes, instantly regretting my words.

I was just about to apologize when Conn leaned forward in his chair. All I could see were the whites of his eyes, but that was all I needed to see to know he was staring straight at me. When I’d been younger and under the impression that Conn could do no wrong, I’d measured my life in the moments when Conn had looked at me and me alone. There were only two ways he looked at me: straight through or straight on. Now I would have preferred he look straight through me because his eyes pulled things out of the place I’d buried
deep inside myself.

“I don’t know. Have you gotten over your Conn issues?”

...................................................................................................................................................
My Review

"The Art of Pretending" is a  YA novel set in a present day high school. Our main character, Alyssa Reed, is entering her senior year and has decided she is tired of being invisible and enlists her girl-friends to help her with what she deems as Opportation Sex Appeal. New clothes, new hair and new make-up in tow she secretly sets her sights on getting the most popular boy in school, Justin Carter, to ask her to homecoming.

Her best friend, Brandon Taylor, hears of her mission and tries to convince Aly this is all a stupid idea and she doesn't need to change because Justin isn't worth her effort. But no matter how hard he tries he only ends up solidifying her ambition. In last ditch effort, Brandon agrees to pretend to be Aly's boyfriend to protect her from herself and the scrutiny of others.

In the midst of all her planning and scheming, Aly never intended to get hurt, break hearts, and find herself all in 6 weeks. Entertaining, lighthearted, and naive are all words I would use to describe this book. Rachel Harris writes an excellent young adult novel all tied up with a perfect ending. This book walks the line between juvenile and young adult literature because it borrows the level of emotional depth of a juvenile reader, but describes the situations a young adult may encounter. I would recommend this book for the newer young adult, but a more mature individual in this age range may find it a little lacking.

My only complaint is the extreme level of innocence portrayed throughout the book. While there is under aged drinking, some language and suggestion of sex, the extreme portrayal of Aly's purity is a bit much. If Aly had said "Holy Canoli" one more time in this book, I'm was going to rip my e-reader apart! Is she 12?!

I just kept envisioning Chrissy's face from Now and Then saying "Holy Canoli!" (The sweetness in this giph makes me want to cry!) There is no way this senior in high school is ready for the real world that awaits.
This is what I envision:
I want to say a special thank you to this ball for looking like planet Earth...without it this gif would lose all symbology and make me an ass.

Book to Movie - Again!?!

What's the Deal?! Is Hollywood out of ideas?

The answer is, No. They aren't out of ideas. There are so many books made into movies, a person could wonder. However, it seems to come in waves. I like to think it all started with the increasing demand from the procrastinating English student. :)

In this post I want to introduce an author who will have my attention and readership for the rest of my life, Gayle Forman. She has a multitude of talent she bestows on the world through her many books including her series:

If I Stay
You may recognize "If I Stay" from its previews as a major motion picture! I have been thrilled ever sense. I urge all readers, if you liked "Fault in Our Stars" you'll freak over "If I Stay."
Just another great read you can't miss!
