Turning a bad boy into a romance hero

Zander Freedman, the rock star hero of Rise, has been a minor character in three previous books. I wrote him as vain, selfish and egotistical, a neglectful son, bad brother and lousy boyfriend. And yet readers loved this guy and wanted his story, possibly because of his few attractive qualities - unflinching honesty, intelligence and a keen sense of irony.

One of my biggest challenges in finding ‘the hero-within’ was Zander’s reputation for vanity. How is a reader going to fall in love with a guy rumoured to have had everything from Botox and tattooed eyeliner to hair implants?

In one scene, I had the heroine’s family voice every Yuck the reader would have around a guy with a ‘beauty’ regime. And then fall over themselves when they thought Zander was visiting. Because the guy’s still a rock god, still extraordinary. And it’s too easy to criticize a stranger. In effect, I'm asking the reader to keep an open mind.

Given that Zander is smart and ambitious it also made sense that he would deliberately exaggerate his vanity for the press. Any publicity is good publicity when this showman is promoting the band’s tour. He also takes a pragmatist’s view of maintaining his looks; keeping in shape is simply a part of his job as Rage’s frontman. And finally, I made him supremely confident in his masculinity. At one point he even says, “A real man should be able to seduce a woman in a tutu and a tiara…Actually that would be fun.”

Most importantly, I gave Zander the vulnerability attached to being a beautiful person. Women date me because of the way I look. What will happen if I stop these treatments? Who will love me as I age? The Beauty, as well as the Beast, is judged on appearances.

Of course that’s just one aspect of the reinvention of Zander Freedman. Hopefully, I’ve intrigued you enough to read about his moral make-over.

We begin by meeting Stella, our heroine, Blake, our hero, and Zoe, best friend to Stella and sister to Blake. While Stella secretly crushes on Blake, a gorgeous and famous ex-football player turned team owner, she promises herself she will never let her fantasies of Blake put her friendship with Zoe in jeopardy. Until one frightening day, Zoe's life is compromised and none of their relationships are ever the same.

I would like to begin by dissecting the main characters. Stella is an only child of parents who own the family's city famous Italian restaurant, Baccino's. With lots of cousins, aunts, and uncles near by, this close knit group becomes the stereotypical loud, loving and protective Italian family. How this relationship translates into the story, is minimial.

Before everything in the story complicates, they spend an evening eating a home cooked meal at her families home. It is here where Stella's omniscient mother is introduced to both Zoe and Blake and says, "Call me Teresa, you're family now."

Cue all "Godfather" impressions...

Having this strong family connection, illustrates the missing family of Blake and Zoe. Zoe's parents and Blake's mother die in a car accident and at young age, Blake assumes custody of Zoe. It is interesting to see the development of the characters as their past instincts take over in their personal relationships and slowly become their greatest weaknesses.

This book is highly entertaining as each character has their "come to Jesus" moment and tries to repair their once treasured relationships.

They say life is about choices. You spend your life making decisions and dealing with the consequences, whether they are positive or negative. In my tumultuous frame of mind, I make a choice. A very poorly thought out choice, but one that I have to live with, nevertheless.

As soon as Cassidy finishes her encore, I tell the girls that we’re going backstage to meet the singer. They follow behind the private elevator to the lower level of the Chi Center, talking giddily. I push their voices out of my mind, leading them with long, purposeful strides.

There are perks to owning the joint. The security guards clear the way for me, knowing not to bother me when I’m in a foul mood.

With a short knock, I push my way into Cassidy’s crowded backstage room. The moment she lays her fake-eyelash covered gaze on me, she squeals. The sound hurts my ears, but I pretend it doesn’t.

“Blake Campbell, I didn’t know you were coming back here!” She literally launches herself at me, latching her over tanned arms around my neck and thrusting her glitter-speckled tits against my chest.

And then, in plain sight of Stella, I yank the pop star into my arms and thrust my tongue down her throat.

You are a moron.

"Stella, please wait."

I know my heart is at risk. It's tottering on the edge of a cliff, and a stiff wind could send it over the edge. He has the power. To scar me. To break me. To destroy me. But the moment that he murmurs my name, I relinquish control.

“Why?” I choke out. “Who are you? The nurturing big brother? The loving, compassionate guy I’ve come to know, or the conceited prick using me for my body? You know what; don’t answer that. I can’t do this anymore.”

I take a few steps back. Heartache, my steady companion, reappears. Without the distraction of his touch, I’m reminded that it’s bitterly cold outside and a stark shudder rolls through my entire body.

“You’re cold,” he mutters unhappily and shrugs off his suit jacket. Before I have a chance to argue, he drapes it around my back. Blake’s large hands settle on my upper arms and begin to rub vigorously.

“Why does my temperature matter?” I ask the question to this collarbone, refusing to make eye contact with the man who continues to torment my emotions.

“Stella –” there it is again, my name on his lips is tremendously distracting–“I want to start over with you.” Another shiver cascades through my shoulders and he makes a pained expression. With an arm anchoring me to his side, Blake leads me back through the door of the club and into the secluded hallway. I wrench out of his grip and put some much-needed distance between us.

“Start over with what?”

“A first date, we’ll need one of those.”

“You’re not making any sense, Blake.”

“It’s pretty simple. When a woman captures all a man’s attention, when she’s the only thing on this mind, he takes her on a date. Then another and another and another until he can convince her to be his.”

The words make my body go rigid in disbelief and my heart slow in my chest. I let my eyes fall closed as I shake my head back and forth. “Don’t say things like that to me, Blake.”

Even though I can’t see him, I sense him getting closer. Then his knuckles trail down my cheek in a whisper of a caress. “I won’t stop, Stella. This is going to happen and we’re going to do it right. That night last month… I don’t regret what happened between us because I wanted you.” His voice drops into a husky murmur.

This story is fun and entertaining. I thoroughly enjoyed the voice and first person narration. So often I've read books where using this style fell flat. However, in this book there were well developed and supporting characters to provide addition insight into the events and plot that the story was fully  developed and multidimensional.

This novel had wonderful and nostalgic details about teenagers growing up in the 90's. The girly and rebellious teenage years of Renee and Justine add depth and character to this wonderful story of rediscovery.

You crack open a pistachio and toss it in your mouth. “Being different makes you stand out, Stel.”
“I don’t want to stand out. I just want to be normal,” I mutter.
Popping another one in, you say, “Normal is boring. It’s overrated.”
My mouth twitches. I never thought of it that way. “Yeah, I guess.”
You nod at an empty booth in the corner. “Shall we?”
“Sure.”
“Great.” I can tell my answer wasn’t what you were expecting.
You start to walk behind the bar when you notice I haven’t moved yet. “What?”
“You were nervous.” It’s not a question. I don’t need an answer. I already know.
“Yeah.”
“Why?”
You lean across the bar top. “Like I said. You’re intimidating. Come on. Let’s go have that drink. Lord knows it’ll take you forever.”
Getting up from the bar, I grab my wine and start to walk toward the empty booth. “Already trying to get rid of me?”
Standing in front of me, you shake your head. “No.”
“Then what is it?”
“I can’t wait to know everything about you.”
Relief washes over me when you don’t wait to see my expression. Happiness. Bewilderment. Confusion.
Happiness because you actually want to get to know me.
Bewilderment because I’m surprised you’re so straightforward. With Thomas I knew what I wanted and went after it. With you, I’m…Confused, I don’t understand the emotions I’m experiencing. It’s new to me, and I’m not sure I like it.

About the Author

For the past 21 years, I have been a planner and an organizer. I always needed things a specific way and then everything changed for me. I've always had a vivid imagination and thoughts racing through my mind. I realized that life is way too short to let things pass me by, because in the blink of an eye everything could change. So I decided to just live in the moment, taking every chance and opportunity led my way. No second thoughts and just going with the flow.

I decided to put the fictional characters and the conversations going on in my head to paper. I know, it makes me sound crazy, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I've embraced crazy and hectic and last minute because it's led me to making my dreams a reality.

When I'm not writing Happily Ever After's I'm reading about them and living one. I think this world is filled with too much sadness already we don't need to read about it as well. I write because I love it and I've allowed my imagination to run wild and be crazy and free. Just like me.

Excerpt #2

Tossing the bra at your feet, I ask, “What do you think?” I get onto my knees and crawl over to you, lying on my stomach, resting my head in your hands. “Do you like it?” I see your eyes. They’re glued to my ass, right where I was hoping you’d be looking. “So, I’m gonna guess you like what you see?”
Your eyes dart to mine. “Like? I fucking love it. Makes me want to fuck you so badly right now.”
My belly swarms. “I’m not complaining.”
“Stella,” you say sternly.
Walking out of the room, I hear a lot of rummaging. I think you’re mad at me. I’m just about to get up and grab my clothes, ashamed, embarrassed you would reject me. At the last possible second, you save me.
You walk in holding the easel and paints. “Not at all. But I know if I don’t start painting you, I won’t get around to it.”
“Oh.” I smile. “Okay. How would you like me?”
Clearing your throat you say, “Thong off.”
“Alex,” I purr. “Are you sure you want to tempt yourself like that?”
I watch as you think it over. You look away from me, your mouth moving, almost like you’re having a conversation with yourself. “As shitty as it’s going to be with your naked body tempting me, I’ll take it. I need to see you, Stella. All of you. Now, take your thong off.”
I nod and stand from the bed. I don’t say anything. I can’t. I’m in awe of you, the way you take control. I would’ve never thought that of you. It turns me on. Placing my hands under the strings of my thong, I push it down my body and toss it to the side. I don’t do anything else. I want you to tell me what to do.
“Now lie on the bed.”
